Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or saved, and it’s gone when you close the page.

Pay and tax

Take-home pay

Weighing up a new job or a pay rise? See the Income Tax and National Insurance on a salary, and what reaches your bank.

Your figures for Take-home pay

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • 2026/27 rates. One job, and the salary is your only income.
  • The standard £12,570 Personal Allowance. It goes down by £1 for every £2 you earn over £100,000.
  • Employee National Insurance at 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above that. This is category A, which most employees are on.
  • Pension contributions, salary sacrifice, student loans, company benefits and tax code changes aren’t included.
  • Payroll works things out each pay day, so your actual payslips can differ by a few pounds.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Pay and tax

Add or remove VAT

Pricing a job or checking an invoice? Add VAT to a price, or take it out of a price that already includes it.

Your figures for Add or remove VAT

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • VAT is rounded to the nearest penny, with half a penny rounded up, and the rest is worked out from that.
  • You need to check which rate applies to what you’re selling. Exempt sales aren’t the same as zero-rated ones.
  • It doesn’t cover VAT returns, the Flat Rate Scheme, the reverse charge or invoices with mixed rates.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Pay and tax

Stamp Duty

Buying a home or a rental property in England or Northern Ireland? Estimate the Stamp Duty Land Tax before you make an offer.

Your figures for Stamp Duty

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • Standard rates: 0% up to £125,000, 2% to £250,000, 5% to £925,000, 10% to £1.5 million, then 12%.
  • First-time buyers pay 0% up to £300,000 and 5% up to £500,000. Above £500,000 there’s no relief. If you’re buying with someone else, they must be a first-time buyer too.
  • An additional property costing £40,000 or more pays an extra 5% on the whole price.
  • You’re UK resident, buying one whole home as an individual. The 2% non-resident surcharge, companies, leases, mixed-use and shared ownership aren’t covered.
  • Wales and Scotland have their own taxes. Use the links below for those.

Pay and tax

Company car tax

Offered a company car, or thinking of putting one through the business? See the yearly tax on the benefit.

Your figures for Company car tax

The list price plus taxable extras. Not the price paid or the lease cost.

From HMRC’s table, based on the car’s CO2 and electric range. Fully electric cars are 4% in 2026/27. Include any diesel supplement. This isn’t your tax rate.

The highest rate you pay on your income. Scottish taxpayers pick from the Scotland list.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • 2026/27. The car is available all year, you don’t pay anything towards it, and there’s no salary sacrifice.
  • All of the benefit is taxed at the rate you pick. If it takes you into a higher band or cuts your Personal Allowance, the real figure is higher.
  • Your employer pays Class 1A National Insurance at 15% on the benefit.
  • Fuel for private driving is a separate charge. Use the fuel benefit calculator for that.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Pay and tax

Company car fuel benefit

Does your employer pay for fuel you use for private driving? That’s a separate taxable benefit. See what it costs you.

Your figures for Company car fuel benefit

From HMRC’s table, based on the car’s CO2 and electric range. Fully electric cars are 4% in 2026/27. Include any diesel supplement. This isn’t your tax rate.

The highest rate you pay on your income. Scottish taxpayers pick from the Scotland list.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • 2026/27: £29,200 multiplied by your car’s benefit percentage.
  • It applies if your employer pays for any private fuel and you don’t pay all of it back. Paying back part of it doesn’t reduce the charge.
  • Electricity isn’t fuel for this charge, so a fully electric car has no fuel benefit. The car itself is still taxed.
  • Full year, one tax rate, and no salary sacrifice.

Business and planning

CIS deductions

Paying a subcontractor under the Construction Industry Scheme? Work out the deduction and what to pay them.

Your figures for CIS deductions

Materials they bought directly, plant hire, consumables and fuel (not fuel for travel). Without VAT.

HMRC tells you the rate when you verify the subcontractor.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • The deduction is the rate multiplied by the invoice less the costs you leave out. All figures are without VAT.
  • Use the rate HMRC gives you when you verify the subcontractor.
  • VAT and the domestic reverse charge are handled separately.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Business and planning

Fuel cost of a trip

Quoting for a job further afield? Turn the miles and the pump price into the fuel cost of the trip.

Your figures for Fuel cost of a trip

UK miles per gallon.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • UK (imperial) gallons of 4.54609 litres.
  • Fuel only. Wear, insurance and servicing aren’t included.
  • It isn’t an HMRC mileage rate. For business miles in your own car, HMRC’s approved rate is 55p a mile for the first 10,000 miles, then 25p.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Business and planning

Gross profit and margin

Setting prices? See your gross profit, and the difference between margin and markup.

Your figures for Gross profit and margin

Stock, materials and other costs that go up and down with sales.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • Gross profit is sales less the direct costs of those sales.
  • Margin is gross profit divided by sales. Markup is gross profit divided by cost.
  • It’s before overheads, tax and anything you take out, so it isn’t the money you can draw.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Business and planning

Price, volume and profit

Wondering what a price rise or a busier month would do? Change price, volume and costs, and see the effect on profit.

Your figures for Price, volume and profit

Use a minus sign for a fall, for example -5.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • A change in volume moves sales and direct costs together. Overheads stay the same.
  • It doesn’t predict how customers react to a price change. That part is your judgement.
  • Before VAT, interest and tax.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Business and planning

Savings growth

Putting money aside each month? See what it could grow to.

Your figures for Savings growth

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • The same yearly return every year, turned into monthly growth.
  • You add money at the end of each month.
  • Tax, fees and inflation aren’t included. Returns aren’t guaranteed and can go down.
  • The return is your own assumption. It isn’t a rate on offer.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Business and planning

Savings target

Saving towards a figure? See how long it could take to get there. The example is £1 million, but use your own.

Your figures for Savings target

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • The same return and the same monthly amount every year.
  • Tax, fees and inflation aren’t included. Returns aren’t guaranteed.
  • It looks up to 100 years ahead. Some targets won’t be reached in that time.
  • This is arithmetic, not investment advice.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Business and planning

Starting a business

Starting out on your own? See how much money you need to start with, and the sales you need each month to cover your costs.

Your figures for Starting a business

Rent, insurance, software and other fixed costs.

The share of each sale left after direct costs. The gross profit calculator works this out.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • Money to start with is your setup costs plus the months of overheads you choose to keep back.
  • Stock, waiting for customers to pay, tax, loan repayments and what you draw for yourself aren’t included unless you add them in.
  • The monthly surplus is before tax and finance costs. It isn’t the same as cash in the bank.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Borrowing

Mortgage repayments

Thinking about a mortgage or a remortgage? See the monthly payment and the interest over the whole term.

Your figures for Mortgage repayments

The rate on the offer, not the APR.

A repayment mortgage pays off what you borrowed as well as the interest.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • The rate stays the same for the whole term. In real life a fixed deal usually ends after a few years.
  • You pay once a month, at the end of each month.
  • Fees, overpayments and insurance aren’t included.
  • With interest only, you still owe the full amount at the end of the term.
  • This shows what the borrowing costs. It doesn’t tell you what a lender will offer you.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Borrowing

Loan repayments

Looking at a loan for the business or for yourself? See what it costs each month and in total.

Your figures for Loan repayments

The rate on the offer, not the APR.

3 years is 36 months.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • The rate is fixed and you make equal payments at the end of each month.
  • Interest is worked out monthly. Many lenders work it out daily, so their figures can differ by a little.
  • Arrangement fees, payment holidays, early repayment charges and balloon payments aren’t included.

Not sure it fits your situation? Ring us on 0113 460 1786 and we’ll go through it with you.

Borrowing

APR from your repayments

Got a finance quote with a fee? Work out the yearly cost from the repayments, so you can compare offers on the same basis.

Your figures for APR from your repayments

A fee paid on the day you get the money. Leave out any fee that’s added to the loan.

Your estimate shows here. Put in your figures and press Work it out.

What this assumes

  • You get the money in one go, pay any fee on the same day, then make equal monthly payments starting a month later.
  • Irregular dates, insurance and other fees aren’t included.
  • The fee has to be less than the amount you borrow.
  • The APR the lender quotes is the one that counts. Use this to compare offers and check the figures add up.
